Who we are

A history of ice cream

Kirke’s Homemade Ice Cream was established in 1992 in St.Clairsville Ohio by Kirke Porterfield. The history goes back to 1926 when Kirke’s granddad Herb Walker, started the ice cream journey. Herb made all of the ice cream from his parent’s boarding house on U.S. 250 in Colerain Ohio where they served food and ice cream.

As Herb got older, his son Gene did most of the ice cream all while working on the farm. As years went by Kirke grew a passion for ice cream and opened ‘’Kirkes Homemade Ice Cream’’ on August 26th, 1992 in St.Clairsville Ohio. The ice cream was and still is, made on-site daily with different flavors all through the year. Throughout time Kirke has grown the business into what it is now both retail and wholesale. We added 2 mobile units of our own to serve the valley on wheels at special events or even partys. All while staying local, the business has expanded throughout the state and even made its way to West Virginia.

Today our ice cream is in 20+ locations along with another ice cream shop coming in the spring to Shadyside Ohio.

I won a half gallon of ice cream from Kirke's Homeade Ice Cream that they offered from WWVA 1170 AM. I made the one hour drive to Ohio from Greene County Pennsylvania. I purchased a famous Kirke's Flight and bought two other half gallons of ice cream. My family and very close friends were delighted and very impressed with the ice cream and will make another trip when these half gallons are gone. Great job Kirke thank you for your work and the half gallon.Tom

I recently was visiting family in Wheeling, WV when I stubbled upon Kirke's ice cream inside of the candy shop in Olgebay. I have been lactose intolerant for the better part of 25 years, so needless to say, ice cream options have been fairly limited (at least ones that are decent tasting). I tried Kirke's non-dairy vanilla ice cream made with almond milk and I have to say that it was the best tasting non-dairy ice cream I have had in my entire life! Even though I live in Northeast Ohio, I will be making a special visit to Kirke's ice cream shop on my next trip down! Thank you for making ice cream enjoyable again!!!

We went here almost every Friday during the summer and i was always pleased with the ice cream and the portions are very large. I usually get the salted Carmel flavor of ice cream which is very good and I also tried it as a milkshake and the result was very good. Very friendly staff who are very patient with your order. The place is always clean which is a major bonus. all in all I'm very excited for the summer to have some more ice cream.
